Opening Reception: Friday, March 4, 2011, 5-7pm
Pure light is invisible. All of our visible experience is the result of a sort of interference pattern created by the presence of matter. My work is about this interaction between the invisibility of light and the forms or surfaces it comes to describe.
222 Shelby Street Gallery is proud to announce a one-person exhibition by artist Mayumi Nishida entitled Luminous: The Work of Mayumi Nishida. The exhibition will open Friday, March 4th with a reception at 222 Shelby Street Gallery, from 5-7 pm.
Luminous: The Work of Mayumi Nishida will be on exhibit from March 4 - April 4, 2011.
Mayumi writes about her installation work:
"My experience of moving off-the-grid two years ago led to a profound change in my perceptions regarding the natural world, energy, and the way that I live. For the first time in a long while I was reminded of the Japanese phrase - megumi no ame - and maybe this was the first time I understood these words in a truly visceral way. A literal translation into English would be something like a welcome rain but the sense in which I have come to experience the concept in a home that uses catchment as its major water source goes beyond that. The experience of drinking, bathing, and washing, and making art with rainwater that I watched fall gives the phrase a whole new, almost holy meaning for me. Another translation might be a blessed rain. Maybe this is closer to what I feel."
